Introduction:Laser Doppler imaging (LDI) is the ‘gold standard’ tool for the assessment of burn depth. However, it is costly. The FLIR ONE is a novel, mobile-attached, thermal imaging camera used t

Laser Doppler imaging ( LDI) can be used to measure superficial blood flow in the skin and other vascularized tissues. A laser Doppler perfusion imager functions by projecting a visible-to- infrared laser beam onto the surface of a tissue. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a method used to assess blood flow in microvascular systems. Attempts are being made to adapt this technology to assess pulpal blood flow. A diode is used to project an infrared light beam through the crown and pulp chamber of a tooth. The infrared light beam is scattered as it passes through the pulp tissue.

Laser Doppler Perfusion Monitoring (LDPM) - Perimed. Laser Doppler perfusion monitoring measures the total local microcirculatory blood perfusion including the perfusion in capillaries (nutritive flow), arterioles, venules and shunting vessels. The definition of perfusion is the concentration of red blood cells times their average velocity.

A laser source with an attached optical system produces a single laser beam. It is directed in a scanning fashion of the tissue within the ROI (region of interest) by a moving mirror. Backscattered light is captured by the detector. Reflections from moving objects (such as erythrocytes) are subject to the Doppler shift.

The techniques are based on the phenomenon that monochromatic light transilluminating a perfused tissue is spectrally broadened owing to scattering by moving blood cells. In this study, methodological aspects of the two methods are presented.

Besides the LDI values, the camera is able to capture black and white photographs of the same area.

2D Laser Doppler images provide a sub-surface map of perfusion of the skin as a metabolic indicator of angiogenesis underlying malignancies or other diseases processes. Laser Doppler imaging (scanning laser Doppler) LDF offers continuous perfusion measurement.
